Western Australian Museum

Overlooking the stunning Batavia Coast Marina the Western Australian Museum - Geraldton tells the story of the Mid West region and the incredible maritime history of the Dutch East India (VOC) ships that were wrecked on this part of the Western Australian coast and nearby islands. The Shipwrecks Gallery reveals the stories of mutiny and murder at the Houtman Abrolhos Islands when the Batavia wrecked in treacherous reef in 1629. The impressive Batavia portico stands proud as a relic of the precious cargo the Batavia had on board. Other stories in the Gallery include the Vergulde Draeck (Gilt Dragon) (1656), Zuytorp (1712), and the Zeewijk (1727) with exhibits of salvaged treasures such as coins, ceramics and cannons. Learn about the lives of the local Yamaji people and the development of European settlement, or discover the region's native flora and fauna, including the abundant wildflowers. Daily guided tours are available. The Museum's shop has a range of books, gifts and souvenirs that are suitable for every age and interest.
