Gunnedah Shire Council and Landcare Groups have encouraged and nurtured the growth of the koala colony by initiating the planting and expansion of tree corridors, which allow the koalas access in and around the town district. Due to the abundant variety of favoured eucalyptus and freedom from disease, Gunnedah's koala population is increasing, and the locals and visitors alike feel privileged to have access to these endangered Australian icons. The basalt topped hills around Gunnedah and across the Shire provide perfect soils for growing koala's favourite trees. A koala is often seen in the River Red Gum across the street from the Visitor Information Centre. Other popular koala hang-outs include St Xaviers School, Tourism Caravan Park, along Stock Road walking/cycle track, the Bindea Walking Track on Porcupine Lookout, TAFE Campus grounds, and the western end of the showground complex.
