Tjatu Gallery sells art created by local traditional owners of the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands from community arts centres Mimili Maku Arts and Iwantja Arts. Both communities are situated between 50 and 100 kilometres north west of Marla Travellers Rest (permits are required to enter the communities). Works on canvas are bold and striking displays of contemporary Aboriginal art and range in price between AUD100.00 and AUD500.00. The Maku Wapar (witchetty grub songline) and Owl Wapar (owl songline) are significant songlines for this area and feature strongly in many of the works. Traditional imagery, symbols and narrative are combined with wild, abstract application of colour resulting in complex depictions of country and stories. Both Art Centres are Anangu owned and directed and provide one of the main sources of independent income in these remote communities. Both centres adhere to the Aboriginal Art Code which outlines the ethical production and distribution of Aboriginal art.
