Fred the Tree is a Casuarina pine tree. Fred grows out of a roadbed on the historic Old Seven Mile Bridge which was completed as part of the Florida Keys Over-Sea Railroad in the early 1900s. That bridge parallels the newer bridge used by motorists today. Fred's section of the Florida Keys Over-Sea Railroad is no longer regularly accessible to tourists, but you can wave to Fred as you drive past on Hwy 1.
