- Rawlins was named for Union General John Aaron Rawlins, who camped in the locality in 1867.
- Larry Wilcox, co-star of the popular 1970s TV show CHiPs, grew up in Rawlins.
- Rawlins is also a full-facility tourism center and is the point where US 287 branches off to the northwest to serve both Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks.
- Big Nose George, a Wild West outlaw, was hanged by a lynch mob in Rawlins in 1881.
