“Attractions & Culture in Athol, KS”
The Home on the Range Cabin, near Smith Center, Kansas, is a log cabin built by Dr. Brewster Higley VI in 1875. It is associated with the song "Home on the Range", written by Higley as a poem in 1872 while living on a dugout that he built on the banks of the Beaver Creek. Higley's friend Dan Kelley set the poem to music; the song eventually became famous and is now the state song of Kansas. The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. The cabin site is 240 acres of range and cultivated land owned by Peoples Hearland Foundation. The cabin was restored in 2013 to its 1870s appearance.
Reviews
Well kept with history boards all over. This was all around a great stop, it had a loop that was Easy for me to pull my 34ft trailer through! Also had a portapotty on site.
I really enjoyed this quick stop. They didn't have music playing like one reviewer mentioned, but it was still pretty cool. There is space to do a little hiking.
I have to tell you, I was shocked of how much work has been put into this monument. The cabin is in immaculate condition, inside and out.
When you walk inside, the song comes on. I'll admit, I annoyed my friend singing the song for hours after our visit.
I personally think that this was worth the stop.
It does have a portable potty, should you need a pit stop. There are no refreshments as this is a farm, not a commercial property.
