“an ocean front Victorian 'cottage'”
The May Caper at 815 Beach Avenue is an ocean front Victorian 'cottage' in the historic district of Cape May. There are two balconies on the second floor that offer a full view of the ocean, and a large sweeping porch on the first floor. We offer an informal atmosphere, a welcome to children and large families. We do not have wall to wall carpeting, a pool, air conditioning or cable television.
Reviews
I have stayed her a few times and it's location is ideal (to the beach and to the Boardwalk and activities of all kinds). However it's a bit "rustic" and, while that is good in the sense that you don't feel as though you might "damage" any of the miss-matched furniture and relative décor, there could be more "charm" to the rental.
It's a good and relatively inexpensive property - especially if you go with a group of friends or with family.
However, be aware that the owners are a bit quirky and there one "rule" or "ask" is that renters "take out the garbage" on garbage pick-up days- which entails rolling some stand-up bins from the back of the property to the curb - a few yards. This is the only vacation rental property that has ever asked this and I found it a bit irksome.
They also have asked (in past visits) if someone in our party wouldn't mind "answering the phone if it rings and taking a message if it's someone interested in renting." Additionally, someone in my party was asked if "they would mind showing an open unit to a potential renter, if they wander in and if you are here?" Sorry but, if you want to take some $ off the rental agreement, I can play realtor but I found this a bit odd.
Again - it's a great location and steps from the beach (and, the times we have rented) came with a certain number of beach passes -always a great "plus."
There is an attendant for the property but they have limited hours - I always wondered why they weren't required to take out the garbage on pick-up days, potentially answer the phone or be on-site to show potentially open rental rooms within the "cottage."
Overall though, and despite the "quirks" of the owners, we have had wonderful memories in this property.
Oh - and in the past, they had a washing machine and dryer in the rear of the building for potential use - not sure if they still maintain that.
