“peace and quiet among the redwoods”
The redwoods in the Grizzly Creek area were what inspired Owen R. Cheatham, founder of Georgia-Pacific Corporation, to preserve this site in perpetuity. The Cheatham Grove is an exceptional stand of coast redwoods. The park is a quiet place to camp, hike, fish, swim and picnic. The Van Duzen River flows beside the campground. 30 campsites, canoe and kayaking, fishing & swimming in Van Duzen River, group camp &/or picnic area, 4.5 miles of hiking trails, horse shoe pit, environmental camp, visitor center with exhibits and bookstore. Although Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park covers only a few acres, it is large enough to provide a sense of seclusion, and it receives so few visitors that on a weekday it is possible to be the only person in one of its groves of coast redwoods.

The campground is just off scenic Route 36 and is nestled under the towering redwoods and along the Van Duzen River.
This is a small campground with about 30 sites. The campground doesn’t offer any hookups.
We found no trouble finding a flat site. Even though the campground is along the road, we didn’t hear much traffic noise at night. Since Route 36 is a winding scenic byway, I imagine the traffic drops off after dark once you can’t view the redwoods.
The bathrooms were clean, but old. There are water spigots available in the common areas. There is also a large grassy picnic area situated along the river and under the redwoods.
There was Verizon 3G service, 1 bar, at the entrance to the campground, but once in the campground there was no service at all. The welcome center does offer wifi which can be accessed from the picnic table outside of the center. It was fast enough to allow us to start up our laptops and do some research about our next few stops. The wifi is on from 8AM to 9PM.

We didn’t have a reservation and were able to get a nice spot on a Wednesday night in Summer. It’s right next to the highway, so that may bother some. The river is there and the kids can go down there and play.

Nice clean campground, access for bigger trailers might be hard. We are 25ft travel trailer. Able to fit in 30ft site and not have to unhitch.

We did not have reservations for a Tuesday night, but they had a few spots left. The site was level for our camper van and it seems most of the campers were there to camp, not party. It is nice to be right on the creek which was perfect for a daytime swim/dip. I don’t think I would go there for a camp destination but it made a great pit stop along our journey.
