“Historic monument in the Black Hills of South Dakota”
The Deadwood Sheriff, Seth Bullock, built the Mount Roosevelt Friendship Tower in 1919 as a dedication to his close friend of many years, President Theodore Roosevelt, . Bullock wanted to create a memorial of his friend’s life and a place where people could view wide open spaces that both Bullock and Roosevelt had become so fond of during their lives. Located within the Black Hills National Forest, the monument t is referred to by National Park services as The Mount Roosevelt Picnic Area. It has five picnic sites.and a trail that starts from the picnic area. Restroom facilities are available
Reviews
A beautiful monument just outside of Deadwood. From the top of the tower, you can see the surrounding hills and valleys for miles. If you have mobility issues, this may not be the stop for you: the tower is a ½ mile walk on a dirt path and the stairs to the observation deck are very steep (I am guessing about an 18"/step rise). Worth the stop.
