“one of the most significant of Victorian residences in the country”
Built of stone and steel for the railroad magnate Walter Gresham and his family, this famous house was designed by Nicholas Clayton, Galveston’s premier Victorian-era architect. The Bishop’s Palace is recognized as one of America’s finest examples of Victorian exuberance and Gilded-Age extravagance.
Reviews
The 1892 Bishop's Palace is considered Galveston’s premier building. It’s grand and opulent and pre-dates the hurricane of 1900. The American Institute of Architects has deemed it one of the 100 most important buildings in America. One of the fireplaces is made out of silver. Admission is $10, and there are guided tours every day of the week, from 12:30-3:30.
Bishop’s Palace, also known as Gresham’s Castle, is one of America’s most significant Victorian mansions. It was built between 1887 and 1893.
Admire the lovely castle-like exterior, detailed with turrets and towers and carved granite, limestone, and sandstone.
Walk inside and be amazed by the labored carved woodwork, high ceilings, stained glass windows, fireplaces, and fine furnishings. Self-guided tours are offered daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
We think a visit here is one of the best things to do in Galveston!
