“Tucked into the Sonoma Valley”
The Gaige House was built in the late 1800s by Albert Ebenezer Gaige, who owned thriving butcher shops in San Francisco and Kenwood. His new Glen Ellen home provided living quarters upstairs, and space for a butcher shop below (where the inn’s front desk is today). Albert’s son, Howard, learned butchering from his father and joined him in the family business. Civic-minded Albert helped to build Glen Ellen Community Church in 1895, and also served as the town constable. Tucked into the Sonoma Valley hamlet of Glen Ellen, the Gaige House feels like a secret hideaway. Of course, it’s not really a secret; the Gaige House is regularly recommended in Michelin and other guides, and has been listed repeatedly in Condé Nast Traveler’s Gold List of the top hotels in the world. As of June 1, 2012, Gaige House joined the prestigious Four Sisters Inns collection. An elegant blend of vintage and contemporary, the inn features 23 thoughtfully appointed guestrooms with a modern, Asian flair. The verdant, secluded setting along Calbazas Creek includes an outdoor swimming pool and hot tub, and is accented with delightful surprises in hidden spots: a hammock shaded with ancient oaks, a miniature pagoda in a rock garden, a gurgling fountain. After a day of visiting nearby wineries, boutiques and art galleries, return to the Gaige House to indulge in luxurious spa services provided either in-room, or outdoors in a peaceful and private cabana. All guests enjoy a complimentary, full breakfast every morning, and an afternoon hors d’oeuvres reception. An excellent choice for a honeymoon or romantic Wine Country escape, the Gaige House is also ideal for small meetings and special events.
