“Served as the state's first capitol from 1846 to 1857”
Located on the Pentacrest in the heart of Iowa City; Old Capitol served as the first state capitol and the University of Iowa's first building. In 1976 Old Capitol became a museum dedicated to enlivening Iowa history and culture for all visitors. After nearly five years of recovery from a 2001 fire; Old Capitol reopened and now showcases restored period rooms; changing exhibition spaces; a variety of educational programs; and expanded gift shop.
