“Longest slot canyon in the world?”
The Buckskin Gulch, a canyon in southern Utah, is one of the main tributaries of the Paria River, which is itself a minor tributary of the Colorado River. It is the longest and deepest slot canyon in the southwest United States and may very well be the longest in the world. As such it is one of the premier destinations for slot canyon hikers, and receives a high amount of foot traffic.

Wire Pass Trail to Buckskin Pass. This trail will take you TO Buckskin Gulch. Wire Pass is 3.7 miles out and back. It ends at Buckskin Gulch. You will be in a beautiful slot canyon comparable to Spooky, Peek a Boo or Antelope Canyon. This trail is $6 cash per person at the trail head and requires driving from US89 between MM 25 and MM 26 down House Rock Road approximately 8 miles to the well marked parking area. There is an aluminum household laddar you will have to go down to get there.
Buckskin Gulch is considered by climbing and hiking enthusiasts to be a challenge. Some points along the route are extremely narrow and dark, whilst others are filled with waist-deep water. This makes it ideal for those seeking adventure or a unique location to be active.
Do not start at buckskin gulch!! It’s a four mile hike through desert before you get to the first slot canyon. We met several groups that were told the same story that we were told and they turned back without seeing the slot canyons. Don’t listen to the rangers at the BLM office as they are clueless about the trails. Our trip was ruined by poor information supplied by the BLM office ranger.
We hiked a lot of slot canyons while we spent a month in Utah. I mean, A LOT. I thought that this dream was out of reach for us without a permit until I read about the Wire Pass route, and I am so thankful we did it. The hike into the wash was a hot one, but the beauty of the Wire Pass and Buckskin Gulch slots are unprecedented. No one without a day trip ride of Kanab, Utah should leave the state without hiking this gem.
