“more than just another place for entertainment”
What today is known as The Long Center for the Performing Arts has come full circle from its inception. Originally designed as a playhouse that could accommodate entertainers in the grand era of vaudeville stage entertainment, it was christened the Mars after a rural Lafayette woman submitted the name in a contest that won her $25. From the start, the theater was more than just another place for entertainment. It was literally and figuratively the pearl of the Lafayette oyster. The Mars was front page news in Lafayette newspapers when it opened in 1921 because the city had been without a playhouse for seven years. One paper opined that Lafayette was “once again metropolitan” thanks to the theater’s construction. In times when fire safety was an issue, the Mars was hailed for its sound cand safe oncrete, steel and brick construction. It was designed to seat nearly 1,500 and it was equipped with a grand theater organ and orchestra that poised the theater to welcome the likes of Bob Hope to its stage.
