“Swim in a Desert Lake!”

In the spring of 1916 the board of trustees of the Las Vegas Land Grant hired R. C. Storrie of San Francisco to finish a storage reservoir project for the town. Storrie completed the construction of an earthen dam with a concrete core and eighteen miles of main canals with their laterals. Storrie completed the project in 1921 and sold it in 1922. Though his tenure of five years was short, he did complete the dam and his name stuck on the project and on the state park.

The park's visitor center features historical photos of the Santa Fe Trail and 19th century Las Vegas, which was a hangout for such notorious Old West characters as Doc Holliday, Billy the Kid, and Wyatt Earp. Storrie Lake is one of New Mexico's popular lakes. Storrie Lake offers a visitor center, camping, showers, group shelters, electrical hookups, restrooms, dump stations, boating/boat ramps, fishing, playground, and R.V. pull through sites.

Please note water is shut off during winter, and Main Bathhouse is closed.

Very helpful rangers. Maintenance could use some supervision, there doesn’t appear to be anyone here except the rangers. Very little water in the lake due to severe drought conditions.

Driving north bound from Arizona and the winds were picking up so we needed to pull over. You have to make a reservation if you need water and electricity, other than that. You can pull in a get a first come first served site boondocking only, the bathrooms were clean and the water pressure good. Very dark a quite a good night rest.

I made reservations online for the “water only” site at $10/night. After fees, it averaged $14/night. $14/night is the price for water and electricity, so image that’s then higher too online.
The way to go is the “open camping” (boondocking) way. Just come in, pay like $8 at the front gate, then park anywhere by the lake (these are the closest spots!).
With that, there is no Ramada and table plus a fire pit. I can be ok with that. There is potable water at the dump station.
The views are great.

For $14 a night with water and electric you can much better!! Beautiful view of Storrie Lake. Each site has a picnic shelter. Pull through sites with plenty of room for parking. Has a nice playground for the kids! Las Vegas New Mexico is a few miles down the road. Has everything you need! A lot of history! Would definitely stay again!

We arrived midday and picked a spot in the dispersed camping along the lake. There were two other rvs on the lake but we never saw anyone go in or come out. It was very windy so we couldn’t do a fire but we did see a few stacked rock fire rings. We walked up to the playground and our 3 year old loved it! There was a bathroom on our way up to the playground but it was closed. The porta-potties were not very clean but the pit toilets by the playground were not too bad. There were a few geese that came by our door in the morning while we were eating breakfast. One of the big male geese charged at my daughter so we just kept our distance from them.

I drove through the park today to check it out. I'm staying at the Las Vegas Elks lot but was thinking of moving for the next two days.

There are 25 sites with Electric and Water. Power is 30a. 10 of the sites are pull throughs. These all have shelters. There are additional 4 on the southwest side, also with shelters. Two of those are pull thru and the two others are back in. The others to the north are back-ins.

Best sites with a mix of open and shade are site Odd #'s 3S-15S and Even #'s 6S-10S.

All services including the dump site were closed for the winter.

Now the one negative. The park closes the entry gate at sunset. The exit gate is open 24 hours but has your drive over one way spikes, like at a parking facility to stop people from going the wrong way. As I write this on Nov 10 the gate closes at 5pm. So, if you want to go to dinner or someplace else, when you get back you can only park near the front gate/visitor center. That then leads to a very long walk to your campsite. 200 yards at the closest to 1200 yards at the furthest. Seems they don't want folks from the town driving through. So makes it very quiet at night but rather inconvenient.

We booked 5 nights here basically to kill time at a cheap state park.

It's...just meh. We didn't find the lake to be that scenic. The park is dusty and run-down.

The dumpstation isn't just closed for the winter as a previous review said - it's just closed with no apparent plans to repair. There's a private park up the road 2 miles you can pay to dump at. We just "carried" to our next destination.

We were here in July - and that has to be factored into our experience. Temps were nearing triple digits during the daytimes. It's windy here which prevented us from putting our awning out.

A trip into Las Vegas to explore the town lasted about 1.5 hours - we just weren't feeling it.

The only upsides we see to this park are proximity to I-25, cheap camping, and solid cell signal.

This was our second time at Storrie Lake. It's a great overnight spot if you are in the area. Plenty of primitive spots down by the lake and the sunsets never disappoint. It's an easy pull in no unhooking overnight spot and you're going to get treated to a great sunset.

Lots of port-a-potty's and two large clean bathroom and shower facilities.

After a week of vacation, we needed an inexpensive place to post-up and catch up on work. Storrrie Lake State Park fit the bill.

The developed camping areas in this park seem to be randomly arranged - some spots offer close quarters, while others have plenty of space -- and the electric sites 20-27 are set-up like a typical close-quarters gravel RV park. The dump station is permanently closed, and there are mostly port-o-potties and pit toilets by way of amenities. However, for $8 you can snag a water-front primitive camping spot along the shore of a really pretty (and swimmable) lake with solid Verizon service.

Overall, this place isn't the most scenic or best outfitted state park we've visited in NM, but it was convenient and cheap.
