“Drop into a world of wonder”
Descend into the depths of Onondaga Cave State Park and drop into a world of wonder: towering stalagmites, dripping stalactites, and active flowstones help make the cave a National Natural Landmark and illustrate why Missouri is often called “The Cave State.” Visitors can take guided tours into the underground wonderland. But if you prefer the surface, the park’s Vilander Bluff Natural Area provides a panoramic view of the Meramec River. Easy access to the Meramec River allows visitors to canoe or fish in a bucolic setting.

I went on the cave tour in summer 2017. Onondaga caves have a lot of steep paths which left a lot of the tour group out of breath, but I think most of our breaths were taken away by the 1 & 1/2 hour stalagmite scene. The tour guide was knowledgeable of the caves and seemed very enthusiastic about her job. She even turned the lights off for a minute and allowed us to experience complete silence and darkness; it was cool experience, cooler than the caves temperature (50F year round, so bring a jacket!). They make everyone clean their shoes and kindly inform people who travel to other caves to not wear the same articles of clothing in order to prevent spread of fatal disease in the bat population. There was an admission price of 20-something dollars per adult, but it is definitely a sight worth seeing especially for those first-time cave visitors.
Amazing campground with big sites that are shaded.
I thoroughly enjoyed my cave tour. But very cold underground! Bring a thick jacket or coat, even in the summer.
Although the tour itself is a bit corny and too fast for my pace the cave is actually breathtaking and worth the trip and money.
We were there in October for a wedding nearby. Electric sites were close to full. The electric sites are staggered so that there is a little more space than if they were side by side. We enjoyed the cave tour, but be aware there are a lot of ups and downs in the cave. Hiked the Deer Run Trail. As is true with most Missouri State Parks, the road leading to the park is narrower than we would like for a motor home.

Less than 10 miles, 20 minutes from I-44. Follow signs for park on highway H. GPS may lead you on gravel road, don't do it. Level concrete sites with water and electricity. Nicely spaced. Website map not to scale, try to look at satellite view to sites. You will need definitely need reservations for weekends. Beautiful setting with 2 nice hikes. Access to river front for wading, etc. Little to no phone service. Rare text came thru while hiking. We loved the hikes and setting. We camped here in mid April 2021. The dogwoods and redbuds and wildflowers were in full bloom.

We made a reservation on their web site. On the day of our arrival, we received an email allowing us to check in electronically. Or, you can drive around to find an open site and call to book it. Camp sites were well spaced. All had some shade. Paved pads long enough for 3 cars. Two hiking trails just off the campground. Small lake within walking distance for swimming. Ice and wood on site. Very quiet. No cell service. 1 shower building with laundry facilities - $2 each for wash/dry (bring lots of quarters).Showers & bathrooms were clean and maintained. Extra long picnic table with overhand at one end for camp stove.
