“17,000 years of human habitation”
Welcome to Ocmulgee National Monument this park is a memorial to the relationship of people and natural resources. Native Americans first came here during the Paleo-Indian period hunting Ice Age mammals. Different cultures occupied this land for thousands of years. The Mississippian culture arrived here around 900 constructing mounds for their elite. Today the mounds still remain for all to see.

Take some water and wear hiking shoes. It's worth the trip. The park ranger is very nice and helpful.
This place is AMAZING! If you like Anthropology or Sociology or just good human history, this is a great learning experience. You can stroll out onto the lands, see the mounds, go in them, climb on them. I will never forget this visit.
If there's nothing else to do, this can be an interesting adventure into prehistory. That said, you're not going to see much besides the one structure. The rest is just giant dirt mounds covered with grass and weeds.
Very peaceful and not busy . It's beautiful to walk around and eat lunch and the park ranger is very friendly and informative . :D
So much history here and I wish we would have allowed more time for it so we could have taken our time.
The park rangers are so kind and informative! I loved going here. They span the whole human history of the area. The museum is wonderful, there is a mound you can go in and see the reconstruction of what they think it looked like (based on evidence). You can also walk on top of a few of the mounds which the view is amazing!
I love the Ocmulgee National Monument! It is one of those places that just has everything you need for a fun day with the family. It has 6 miles of hiking trails, an awesome visitor center, and Mississippian Indian mounds — one you can go inside, and one you can climb.
I mean, this place is an actual prehistoric American Indian site! You can’t miss Ocmulgee National Monument in Macon, Georgia.
The Ocmulgee National Monument is located in Macon about 5 minutes off of I-16. If you were spending a day in central Georgia, or traveling down to Savannah, this is a great stop. Did I mention it’s FREE? It is!
Very well maintained park and historical site! Easy to park and access all mounds and museum paints a great picture of the history of the area and Native peoples. Recommend stopping here! Free to access mounds and museum.
