“Oldest continuously operating funicular in the US”
One of Pittsburgh's distinctive features is its cable-powered inclines designed for transportation between the river valleys and the communities on top of the overlooking bluffs. At one time Pittsburgh had about fifteen inclines. Two of them remain, on the south bank of the Monongahela and Ohio Rivers, across from downtown Pittsburgh. They provide service to the Mount Washington for residents and a historic voyage for tourists wishing to sightsee some of the most breathtaking views of our panoramic skylines. The Monongahela Incline, built in 1870, is located near the Smithfield Street bridge, directly across the Monongahela River from downtown Pittsburgh. It has a length of 635 feet, a height of 367.4 feet, and a grade of 78%. Its lower station is across the street from the Station Square's Freight House Building.

We were going to do the Monogahela, but our hotel suggested the Duquesne instead. For a visitor to Pittsburgh, the view was spectacular. We found a restaurant/bar two doors over and went in for a drink. This way we could sit inside and enjoy the view. If we go back to Pittsburgh, we will definitely take the trip after sundown to see the city lights. The restaurant was called Coal Hill Steakhouse.
I loved this!! We thought they closed at 12 (noon) and they are actually open all day and night! It’s beautiful and you get the full view. I definitely recommend it. Price is $2.50 adult and $1.50 kids going up and same price going back down. I would definitely go back if I’m ever back in Pittsburgh.
I think we were absolutely laughable to the attendant when we just wanted a round trip on the incline, and I think the commuters who use it every day probably have grown blind or bored of the sights on the way up and down. We couldn't fit more of Pittsburgh into our trip, but the Monongahela would've have been a great start to a public transit tour of the city.
Fascinating feat of engineering and well preserved architecture from the 19th century. Inside the upper A's lower stations ate interesting exhibits. Plus, it is a practical way to go from the river level up to the lookouts at the top of the hill.
This place is NOT secure. My sons phone fell out the car!! Waiting in line was horrid. It took us an hour! Pricing is okay, but I shouldn't have had to pay $10.50 for my family!
Not worth going too in my opinion.
