“Wildlife Preservation Are in Saint Louis!”
Lone Elk Park is a wildlife management area, with bison, wild turkey, waterfowl, elk and deer. Motorcycles are prohibited. Domestic animals are not allowed, even if confined in a vehicle. Scientifically, the term "buffalo" is incorrect for the North American species; its proper Latin name is Bison bison. However, common usage has made the term "buffalo" an acceptable synonym for the American bison. (from The American Buffalo in Transition, by J. Albert Rorabacher.)

Lone Elk is nice change of a pace. Although, it's a hit or miss if there are animals out or not.
Absolutely amazing!!! We saw so many! They came to the car and walked around it was great!! We even got out!
It was a great experience and is a short distance off the freeway I would totally recommend this for a side trip! It is free and they ask for a dollar per car donation.
I went there with my three youngest kids and we had tones of fun and saw many animals and we all thought the bison were the best😁😁😁
Okay! Wow! Elk, bison, raccoons, turkeys, geese, chipmunks, turtles....etc. It was absolutely amazing. Truly a hidden gem! A must see. We saw all of this from the car....but you can also get out if you want to.
There is obviously no guarantee that the animals will be out and about, but increase your odds of seeing them by arriving early in the day. 8am we saw numerous elk and half a dozen bison today. It was a beautiful park and well worth the trip!
This is definitely a gem in the St. Louis area! If you just drive through it there could be a chance you might not see anything. But when I went we saw bison laying in a field nearby. We decided to take a 3 mile trail that weaves its way around the park and that's when we saw all the elk! We actually literally almost walked into one as we weren't paying attention. Super cool experience but you also want to be careful as the bull elk have been known to charge if you get too close or pose as a threat.
A must see though - - just be smart.
Great stop! We saw 12 elks hanging out by the road and they walked straight up to our car! My son was loved it!
