“an ancient river in a modern city”
Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area preserves a series of sites between Atlanta in the United States and Lake Sidney Lanier along the Chattahoochee River. The 48-mile (77 km) stretch of the river affords public recreation opportunities and access to historic spots. The National Recreation Area, a National Park Service unit, was established on August 15, 1978 by President Jimmy Carter. The park headquarters and visitor center are located at the Island Ford Unit of the park at 1978 Island Ford Parkway in Sandy Springs, Georgia. The Chattahoochee River is a stocked trout stream with 23 species of game fish. Year-round fishing is available with a Georgia fishing license and a trout stamp. An ancient river in a modern City, today the river valley attracts us for so many reasons. Take a solitary walk to enjoy nature’s display, raft leisurely through the rocky shoals with friends, fish the misty waters as the sun comes up, or have a picnic on a Sunday afternoon. Get Outdoors and experience your Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area as you have never done before.
Reviews
This location is the park headquarters at the Island Ford unit of the park system. The visitors center is located an old summer home built in the 1920s, when the wealthy used to go up to the Sandy Springs/Dunwoody/Roswell area to escape the heat of downtown Atlanta. This is a very nice unit of the park system and will give a good overview of the plant and animal life common to the area and the Chattahoochee River in northern Georgia. Be sure to look up information about the other units of the park system, located throughout the Marietta, Roswell, Duluth, Atlanta, and Cumming areas...there are many hidden gems and trails to be found!
