“Outdoors & Recreation in McKinleyville, CA”
Very few parks in California allow camping right on the beach, but Clam Beach County Park is one of them. A wide and long stretch of flat shoreline, Clam Beach is part of a continuous ocean frontage that connects with Mad River Beach County Park to the south and Little River State Beach to the north. It's just minutes away from the town of McKinleyville, where all of your picnic, camping and beach supplies are available. There are two parking and camping areas, north and south, along the frontage road. The facilities are minimal but, hey, it's the beach! The ocean topology here creates a long flat wave slope suitable for surfing. Sand castles and kite flying are particularly popular on this beach as well. Day use is free and camping is first come/first serve basis. 12 Tent sites and 15 RV spaces. Horses allowed here.

Great beach to stretch your legs and walk the dogs (signs say on a leash but there were 3 doggies there already without theirs, all good dogs) on a road trip!
We were very skeptical about staying here, especially with the bad reviews on google and reputation for undesirables preceding itself. The plan was to pull in and make our own decision. It's a large parking lot, right off a road, and right off the freeway with trails down to a beautiful beach.
There were no other campers when we pulled in and we had a chance to speak with the host and was told they are trying to change the reputation of the place. We decided to stay for two nights. They were uneventful nights, although we did notice the similarities to a rest stop because people were always pulling in to use the bathroom. There were also a few vehicles that pulled in to use the bathroom multiple times... There were also some questionable meetings of vehicles.
Overall we were content with our two nights here and the campground served its purpose. I can't recommend the place, but I can recommend stopping in and making your own decision.

We arrived and all seemed ok. When we got back to our pitch at 6pm we wanted to leave but had parted with$25 so had to stay. A travelling group with drugs arrived and didn't have a spot. The campground host was not bothered just said call 911 if there is trouble. Noises til well past 10pm. Felt very unsafe. Would not recommend. 😕 Ps toilets were large holes with piles of poo.

I've been here a few times. It's situated right by the airport, so plane noise can be disturbing - however, it isn't a very high traffic airport. Very convenient to downtown groceries, etc. First-come first serve on camping spots, no hook-ups available. Dog-friendly beach! Camp host is across the street.

Worse place ever. Like a ghetto parking lot, people showing up all through the night partying and fight and loud music. would not recommend to anyone

This is basically a parking lot for campers and RVs, although there are some tent spots off to the side. Fee is a lot for no amenities, but you are really paying for availability (first come) and the location here. The beach is gorgeous and wide and just a short trail from the parking lot. The clientele in the campground can be somewhat questionable, so just lock up your belongings. We felt safe overnight because it filled up pretty fast. No issues with noise, although the highway and airport are close.

I thought walmart was bad. I've rolled up on a few sites like this, it's a frigen run down parking lot, with who knows may show up at any time. There is no privacy, No showers, No water, just a big stinky hole to take a crap in. I think a rest stop for free would be better than here. Sure there is a beach. There is nothing POSITIVE at all besides being next to a beach. AVOID at all cost.

This is a parking lot next to a beach. There are bathrooms and garbage bins. The camping area is small and has some tent sites and pull-throughs, mostly filled with cars and vans when we arrived in the late afternoon. It seems to be more of a overflow for the day use lot adjacent. It's very popular with locals, some who come to enjoy the beach but mostly to party and our evening was interesting. We have a large dog and felt safe enough but this Park is not a good choice for peaceful camping, especially for this price.
