“19th century military fort”
For forty years, 1851-1891, Fort Union functioned as an agent of political and cultural change, whether desired or not, in New Mexico and throughout the Southwest. It is a territorial-style adobe ruins of the largest 19th century military fort in the region that is located within a sweeping valley of short grass prairie, amid the swales of the Santa Fe Trail.

Great monument! Staff were very helpful and friendly. The facilities were clean and air conditioned. The ruins are amazing!! Loved it!
Even though this place is a little off the path, we were glad we took the time to explore. The park staff were great and very willing to answer all of our questions. The ruins were well maintained. This is a great place to see some history and stretch you legs. The views are magnificent.
It is amazing to see how much history passed through Fort Union. It was the most important fort in the southwest in the 1870’s and supplied over 40 others. There is a very educational 1.5 mile walk thru the ruins.
Closes at 4 pm during winter (not 5) and is out where cell service is patchy so we couldn’t get their website to work before driving 18 miles (and 30 minutes) out of our way to be told the Monument was closing in 2 minutes. The Park Ranger did take a very nice family photo of us and provide us with a brochure.
Was very cool! Be on the lookout for snakes! Definitely glad we stopped even though it was a little way off the path
Loved it. Very nice staff. Show 15 min video, and then walk around at your own pace.
Great history and location. The drive in and out is worth it alone. I was the only one there as it was closed due to Covid. There were a few cars there, most likely office workers. The visitor center looks like it would be awesome. I spent about 90 minutes walking the entire grounds, reading everything. I doubt kids would like this much but history buffs and scenic lovers, most definitely.
Great monument, wish we had more time on our trip to spend there. The ruins were great!
