“In memory of those who lost their lives on 9-11”
Winslow is also home to the 9-11 Remembrance Gardens, a memorial honoring those who lost their lives during the September 11th terrorist attacks. The memorial was constructed using two beams recovered from the wreckage of the World Trade Center towers in New York City. The 9-11 Memorial in Winslow is a result of the efforts of Bill Heron and Councilwoman Dee Rodriquez along with a committee planning for a remembrance. There was news of beams from the World Trade Center towers wreckage being given away and the persons in charge of the wreckage were contacted and agreed to give Winslow beams of 14 and 16 foot length, which had to be picked up and transported from the site in two days. Walmart supplied the transportation to Winslow and once the beams were in town, Dale Hancock handled setting them up in the memorial. A large number of citizens donated time and money to the erection of the memorial, which was in place and celebrated on the first anniversary of the event, Sept. 11, 2002. That memorial is at the corner of Transcon Lane and old Route 66 near the Flying J Truck Stop.
Reviews
Contrary to what the previous review stated, this Remembrance garden honoring 9/11 is still there. We went today 4/18/18 and really appreciated it. Very reverent moment to stand there and touch the actual beams from the World Trade Center. Never forget! Take exit 355 off interstate 50. Go south past the Flying J to the first right turn you can make (Original route 66). The monument is just up the road as you head into Winslow, on your left.
Easy on and off the highway. Never Forget.
It is still there! I was just there 9/14/19 and it was still there, The flag was at half mast and the beams were still there, There were hundreds of flags planted in the ground to represent Shanksville, PA, the Pentagon and the twin towers. Actually a very moving spot.
If you stop on the Corner then just a few blocks east is the Garden. Worth a stop along the way. Been by here many a time and try to stop whenever we're passing through. I stood on top of the WTC when I was a kid. To think these beams may have supported me when I was is still hard to fathom.
Definitely worth the stop. Very heartfelt. The beams are from the actual world trade center, and the flag flown there is a flag that was flown at the Pentagon.
Cool stop. Crazy to see it here!
Just drove past and this is no longer here! Needs to be removed from app.
